As its still Advent and therefore the season to be merry and joyful, we at Themis have decided to have a tounge-in-cheek Dickensian reflection on humanity’s complicated relationship with artificial intelligence (AI). Much like Ebenezer Scrooge’s fateful journey through time, you could say our trust in AI has been shaped by the 'ghosts' of the past, present, and future. So, sit back with a glass of something warm as we gather by the digital fireplace for a short Christmas tale.

The Ghost of AI Trust Past whisks us back to the 1950s and 1960s, when computers were the size of living rooms, and scientists predicted that AI would soon perform all human tasks. Trust in AI was blind optimism sprinkled with a touch of terror—a bit like handing a 19th-century banker your life savings and hoping for the best.
Take ELIZA, the 1960s chatbot designed to mimic a therapist. While rudimentary by today’s standards, users poured their hearts out to this simple script. The trust was endearing, if not a little misplaced. Then came the paranoia of HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey - a fictional AI that didn’t trust its human operators and decided they were expendable. Trust in AI took a nosedive as people wondered: 'What if my toaster gains sentience and comes for me?'
In reality, early AI was less HAL, more Tiny Tim—capable but frail. Mistakes were inevitable, but trust was either full-blown faith or outright scepticism. There was no middle ground.

Now, the Ghost of AI Trust Present drags us into last year, 2024, where we live alongside algorithms embedded in everything from our social media feeds to self-driving cars. AI is no longer a novelty - it’s a co-worker, a shopping assistant, and sometimes even a therapist. But do we trust it? Well... it’s complicated.
Consider self-driving cars. While Tesla and Waymo (formerly Google self-driving car project) push toward full autonomy, trust wavers with every news report of an accident or fault. Similarly, AI like ChatGPT has made incredible strides in natural language understanding, but sceptics ask: 'Can we really trust it to separate truth from well-worded nonsense?'
Then there’s the rise of explainable AI. To build trust, companies now show how algorithms make decisions, much like Scrooge begrudgingly explaining his bookkeeping to Bob Cratchit. It helps up to a point. Yet issues like AI bias, privacy concerns, and the mysterious black-box nature of some systems leave people wary. For every success story, like AI detecting diseases earlier than doctors, there’s a fiasco, like AI being tricked into misidentifying images of bananas labeled zebra's.
However, humour plays a role here, too. When an AI image generator misinterprets “cat wearing a Santa hat” as something else far-fetched people laugh, and oddly, trust grows. After all, who doesn’t appreciate a bit of human fallibility in their machines?
The Ghost of AI Trust Future: A Brave New World?
The Ghost of AI Trust Future takes us to 2026 and beyond, where trust in AI could be thriving—or trembling on the edge of collapse. It’s up to us, dear readers, to shape what’s to come. In one possible future, AI is a trusted collaborator. Systems are transparent, ethical, and fair, making AI a helpful companion rather than a misunderstood ghost. Imagine healthcare AI that explains diagnoses clearly, financial algorithms that prioritise fairness, and creative tools that amplify human ingenuity without stealing credit. AI becomes the nephew Fred to our Scrooge—inviting us into a world of connection and trust.
But the other future isn’t so rosy. Imagine deepfake scams so convincing you can’t trust your own grandmother on a video call. Or powerful AI manipulated by bad actors to spread disinformation. Without guardrails like robust regulation, digital literacy, and ethical design, the future could be less 'Merry Christmas' and more Bah, Humbug!
Yet hope persists. Initiatives like the EU AI Act and increased public awareness are paving the way for a future where trust in AI is earned and well-deserved. THEMIS 5.0 is working towards this future where anyone working with AI can assess it against their values and help stimulate improvements to ensure they are used responsibly and ethically.
The End of Our Christmas Carol
Much like Scrooge and the Christmas Carol, our relationship with AI trust has been a journey. From blind optimism to cautious collaboration, we’ve learned that trust in AI isn’t about faith or eternal scepticism. It’s about balance and accountability. Trust AI - but verify. Because while technology can do wonders, it’s still up to us humans, to keep it on the nice list!
